Overweight by James L. White
Cooking for someone can be loaded with danger. He’ll get here at six and I’m filled with a small fear of conversation at the table. I always toy with the edge across my throat, between the cabbage, the duck and coffee we stare into. There are many ways to scream. I’ve chosen the silent one because I”m afraid of being discovered as I am, not who he remembers 20 years ago. I...

the city is a ghost.
she whispers secrets to me in between sleep and wakefulness. see these shadows, she says, they hide my scars. see this man, she says, pointing to the hobbled figure pushing a shopping cart overloaded with cans and bags, he is my heart. my heart is alone in the cold. my heart wanders the streets all night. my heart is what you turn your eyes away from. my heart. my heart. the...

Enigmatical Men
“Whom do you love best, enigmatical man?” -Baudelaire What I liked most was not the holding-on, but the letting-go. There were beautiful things, always. One could always recall a night warm and strange with the sense of being whole of ourselves, the sense that these lives are infinite the way water is infinite, rushing into all things with gentleness and ferocity. There were always...
I miss my friend and getting excited about all the stupid, meaningless things we talked about. It hasn’t been long, but damn it, this is fucking hard.
15 Interesting Facts about Dreams
Re: #5… I read somewhere that some studies have shown evidence that actually everyone dreams in black and white, and we impose color on the dream when we remember it in the waking state.

The cat hears my lonely voice and comes out of her dark corner. Deciding that I need love, she sits on my lap and offers the best kind she knows, warm purrs and soft eyes that say “Here, we’ll sit in your dark corner.”

Today, I said “This song makes me feel like a ghost.” She looked at me like I was crazy and said “That’s really cool.” But really, what I meant to say was, “This song makes me feel like someone else is living my life, like it’s not happening, like I’m living in a movie.”

In Blackwater Woods
In Blackwater Woods by Mary Oliver Look, the trees are turning their own bodies into pillars of light, are giving off the rich fragrance of cinnamon and fulfillment, the long tapers of cattails are bursting and floating away over the blue shoulders of the ponds, and every pond, no matter what its name is, is nameless now. Every year everything I have ever learned in my lifetime leads back to this:...

leaving is not enough; you must stay gone. train your heart like a dog. change the locks even on the house he’s never visited. you lucky, lucky girl. you have an apartment just your size. a bathtub full of tea. a heart the size of Arizona, but not nearly so arid. don’t wish away your cracked past, your crooked toes, your problems are papier mache...
My best friend is a barista. She said that most of the time, she can look at a person and know what they are going to order before they even order it. She said that men who drink cappuccinos are generally more refined and sophisticated. I said “I want one of those.” And she asked “What, a cappuccino?” I said “No. A man who is refined and sophisticated. But if I want...

When I woke, I thought of silence. There is snow on the ground that makes your footsteps soft, as though you don’t really exist, just a ghost of a thing wandering through possible realms of existence. I cannot remember any of my dreams. My ears still ring from the other night, and in a way, that is comforting. I take my noise in feasts and enjoy the silent scarcity for the days to come. I...

Last night, I dreamed the world was made of snow. Everything was quiet, the eye of a storm. I lost myself in that silence. On either side of me were grand mansions, hidden beneath frost. It took me a long time to realize that all those houses were mine, I had my pick. Every door was open to me but all I wanted to do was stay out and fall asleep in the cold.
